SEMINAR LOCATION

The 2010 Master Herbalist Certification Seminar is scheduled to be held at the Herb Shop in Springville, Utah. Our excellent instructors are ready to give you the best, most up to date training in herbology available anywhere in the world.  Our nationally renowned director, David Christopher, MH, will be joined by guest instructors including Dr. James A. Duke, Christopher Hobbs, Dr. Ahmed Warfa, Sandra Ellis (author of Dr. Mom).

HOME STUDY ASSIGNMENTS

All correspondence assignments must be completed before the seminar.  This includes your thesis.  Assignments are due in our office no later than May 10, 2010.

We have also added one more assignment to be completed during the 2010 Master Herbalist Certification Seminar.  This is a teaching assignment that will take some prior preparation.  Review the information below detailing this assignment and make necessary preparations to complete this assignment at the seminar in June.
TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

We have a travel agent that would be happy to book your flight for you, her name is Beryl Pitcher and she can be reached at 1-801-221-4822 or 1-800-444-9970.

If you are flying, Salt Lake International is the closest airport to Provo.  For transportation to and from the airport contact Express Shuttle at 1-877-2SHUTTLE (1-877-274-8885).  They require a 24-hour reservation notice and charge $30 plus tax (one way) from the Salt Lake International Airport to Provo. This cost can be shared if arrangements are made with other students.

Plan to arrive in the Provo area by Sunday, June 20th and to depart from Provo no earlier than 1:00 pm on Saturday June 26th. Flights home need to be scheduled AFTER 4:00 pm on June 26th to give you ample time to complete your testing and for closing remarks. You are welcome to make arrangements with the shuttle service to pick you up at the Herb Shop after the seminar for a Saturday departure.
REGISTRATION

The seminar officially begins at registration.  Registration is at 7:30 am on Monday, June 21, 2010 and is held at The Herb Shop-188 S. Main in Springville (see directions below).

DAILY SCHEDULE

You will receive a detailed Schedule of Events in your packet at registration.  Plan on being in class from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm daily.  There will be a one-hour lunch break and small breaks during each session of class.
MEALS

Lunch will be provided.  You will be responsible for your own breakfast and dinner.  If you are staying at the Residence Inn by Marriot, a complimentary breakfast is offered every morning and a complimentary dinner is offered on Monday and Wednesday nights.
FINAL EXAM

There are two sections to your final exam.  The comprehensive portions of the exam will be administered daily.  Each day you will be tested on the information that was presented to you the day before.  The comprehensive portion of the exam is taken directly from lectures during the week.  Familiarity with the information from your home study course will increase your ability to comprehend the material presented at the seminar.  Plan study time into your evenings if you want to pass the tests!

The identification portion is taken directly from our most current 100 Herb List.  It is to your advantage to memorize the 100 Herb List before the seminar as you will only have the evenings to study while here. For the identification portion of the test you will be given the Latin names of the herbs and will be asked to provide the common names, the part used, medicinal action, and correct identification for all 100 herbs from a plant pressing.  Plant pressings will be set up in the study room Monday-Thursday for your convenience. On Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 9:00 am, the identification exam, and the exam from Friday’s lecture will be administered.
PICTURE REQUEST

We have one more small request to make of you.  You have seen us on the videos, and read about us in books, but we have not had the opportunity to meet you yet!  We would love for you to send us a snapshot of yourself so we can get acquainted with you before you come to our seminar.  This does not need to be a fancy professional picture; we just want to be able to recognize you when you come.  Please put your name on the back of your photo. Pictures will not be returned.

If you are traveling with family or friends, please note that they cannot attend the seminar with you.  There are many things to do in the area, so they should not have a problem finding something to fill their days. If you are having someone pick you up from the seminar, they may wait at Ginger’s Cafe.  Remember, you will be in class from at least 8:30am to 6:00pm each day.  If there are any changes to the seminar schedule (evening lectures, outings, etc.) we will inform you as soon as possible.  Remember that you need to plan study time into your evenings.

We cannot accommodate small children or babies in our lecture facility.  Please leave your children at home, travel with an adult who is qualified to care for them on their own, or plan to attend the Master Herbalist Certification Seminar when they are old enough to be left with a sitter.  As much as we like children, they are disruptive to a lecture and disturb both the student and the instructor.  We appreciate your cooperation.
HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS

We have made arrangements for our student to stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott. The special room rate is $89 a night. Rooms can be shared. To receive the discounted room rate mention you are with the School of Natural Healing. If you encounter any problems you can speak with the Director of Sales, Rita Riling.

The rooms have full kitchens, a complimentary hot breakfast every morning and complimentary dinner on Monday and Wednesday evenings. There will also be a free shuttle service from the hotel to the school and back each day, so there is no need to rent a car if you don’t want to.

An advantage of staying at the same hotel as the other students is that you are able to build study groups in the evenings. This becomes very helpful since you will be tested at the start of each day on the previous days lecture.

Master Herbalist Certification Seminar
Mini-Teaching Assignment

During the 2010 Master Herbalist Certification Seminar you will have the opportunity to present some insights on one of your favorite herbs from the 100 Herb List.  This assignment is an opportunity for you to really focus and explain your knowledge in a limited amount of time.  Guidelines for the assignment follow:

·The presentation must be on one single herb from the SNH 100 Herb list.
·Presentation must not go over 4 minutes-you will be timed.
·You need to include some personal experience you have had with the herb
·Make the presentation INTERESTING!!  We want more than just dry facts!  Look for a new approach to teaching about the herb.  Remember, all of the students here have been through the whole correspondence program, so include information they might not be familiar with.

You must call our offices (1-800-372-8255) and reserve the herb you want to discuss, as only one presentation on each herb will be given. Herbs will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis.  You may want to have more than one choice in mind when you call.
TUITION

Tuition is $1250 (includes lunch but not lodging or other meals).

To hold your spot you need to send a $200 non-refundable deposit (which will applied to your seminar tuition) right away.

If your full tuition is received by March 31, 2010 you get a $100 discount on tuition, making tuition $1150!

Your full balance is due by May 30, 2010.
PREPARATION

To prepare for the seminar review all of your course material.  Previous students feel that focusing on botany and chemistry are helpful, as is memorizing the 100 Herb List.
